Asphalt Shingle Roofs

It’s pretty easy to recognize asphalt shingles. They are usually tiles in different shades of grey. The surface of the shingles have a covering of asphalt that will protect them from the elements, but if this wears of, the tile will quickly deteriorate.

It is easy for moss or algae to start growing on an asphalt shingle roof if there is a lot of moisture and shade, so it is important to trim back trees that hang over the roof, as well as clear off leaves and debris, since it could cause water to pool up and do damage to the roof.

Moss can be very harmful to your roof, as can mold, so if you notice it growing, you should clean it off immediately. Algae could also grow on your roof, and while this is not harmful, it is, however, unsightly. Using a 50/50 solution of bleach and water, you should be able to clean it off to improve the appearance of your home.
